Up next in our LCFMA18 MA Fashion Design Technology Menswear graduate spotlight series is Hengmin Lu from Fujian in China. Hengmin’s collection will appear on the catwalk show on Friday 5 January (livestream here). We spoke about the influences behind the collection, Hengmin’s time at LCF and plans for the future.

Tell us about your final collection…

The title of the collection is Interconnectivity. It is inspired by Mao architecture and structure – I explored functionality and a way of dressing through pattern cutting. It features natural colours like brown, navy, cream and grey-pink. These were applied for the whole collection because I believe the theory of defeated architecture claimed by Kengo Kuma. He asserted that the architecture can be built in low lying land and it can be part of the environment, rather than standing out from nature.

What would be your top tips to new students…

Work hard and think more, and also time management is the key for this short one and a half years!

What made you chose LCF and London…

London is such a multicultural city and I guess it is the capital of the E.U. before Brexit. The reason why I chose LCF is that it provides a platform for students to rebuild themselves.

What were the highlights and biggest challenges of your course…

The highlights were that the course provides a chance for us to learn how to build a image of contemporary menswear brand. The challenge was learning how to reflect within myself at a very deep level.

Have you been on a work placement or internship…

I worked for Ports 1961 for several months.

My biggest inspirations and muses are…

What I learn from life.

What are your plans for life after your MA…

I’m going to create my own brand.
